THE THREE CLASSIC POLAR JOURNEYS

  • The Golden Age of Polar exploration opened in 1888 when the Norwegian Fridtjof Nansen made the first crossing of the Greenland icecap.

  • The American explorer Robert Peary had already attempted a crossing of the Greenland icecap in 1886 but had turned back.  Peary's main goal had always been the North Pole which he finally reached with his remarkable black colleague Matthew Henson and four Inuit in 1909.  Although credited with being the first to achieve the North Pole, controversy still surrounds his claim.
  • Three years later in 1912, another Norwegian explorer, Roald Amundsen won the dramatic race to the South Pole - the race which famously cost the lives of Captain Scott and his four companions.

Of all the polar adventures of that era, these three achievements mark the pinnacles of polar exploration.
They are the CLASSIC POLAR JOURNEYS.
